A Lesson Before Dying Essay 10/31
Being told what you can and can’t do is not and will never be a pleasant
experience. Jefferson from a Lesson Before Dying knows this much too well.
Jefferson is conflicted by Grant, a school teacher who is trying to help him
become a man. Jefferson is also troubled by his godmother, Tante Lou, and
Reverend Ambrose. Both of these people or sets of people all want something
different for Jefferson, but also have one central idea of helping Jefferson, to
make him a man.
Grant is asked to help Jefferson become a man before he is killed. The
way Grant goes about this is not the same way that Jefferson’s godmother, Miss
Louise, or Reverend Ambrose. Grant does not get through to Jefferson the first
few times he meets with him. Finally, he starts talking to Jefferson about stuff
happening in the quarter and offers to bring him stuff he likes. He gets through
to Jefferson this way and he and Jefferson have full conversations because it’s
something that he enjoys talking about. Grant helps Jefferson be distracted from
what is going to happen to him, and helps him enjoy the rest of his time alive
as much as he can.
Grant’s godmother, Tante Lou, and Reverend Ambrose all want to make sure
Jefferson has a good relationship with God before he is killed. Jefferson does
not respond to this like he did to what Grant talks to him about. Talking about
God and the relationship he needs to have with him before dying only makes him
depressed and makes him think about death more than he does with Grant. They do
not realize that this is why they aren’t having a connection with Jefferson,
although Grant tries to explain they just get angry and stress about how
important Jefferson’s relationship with God is.
These two different ideas of how to reach Jefferson can be somewhat
confusing to him which can be why he responds the way he does half of the time.
Grant’s way is effective and the others are not, which makes the others angry
because they want to be the ones that make Grant feel okay about dying.

If you were a parent would you buy a doll that misrepresented your values?
If I was a parent I would buy a doll that misrepresented my values. The reason I would buy a doll like this is because it's just a doll. Just because a doll looks a certain way, it does not mean my child will want to look this way. If my child begins to act a certain way and hint that it wants to look the way a Barbie looks I will be a good parent and talk to my child. Then if my child still insists on looking like the doll I will take it away from her/him and give them a more appropriate doll that does not give my child the idea to look perfect.
Should handguns be illegal?
In my opinion I believe handguns should be illegal. If handguns were illegal it would be more difficult in putting your hands on one, which can in turn save many lives and prevent accidents. Many shootings that occur are accidents and if there was not a gun around it would've never happened. For example, if a little boy finds his parents gun and thinks its a toy he may accidentally shoot someone or himself.
Shootings also occur when someone is angry towards someone or a group of people. If handguns were harder to get your hands on it can and will prevent many murders and mass murders. For example, if it would have been more difficult for Seung-Hi Cho to get a gun if they were illegal. I'm not saying making guns illegal would have prevented this, but it could have made it harder to get which may have prevented it.

Should schools have a vocational track?
I believe schools should have a vocational track for the people who do not want to go to college. I believe it is unfair to have a college track program and not a vocational track for the other people who choose not to go to college. This will help the people who do not want to go to college get the proper training or beginning of the training while they are still in high school. Although some people disagree with this and say that the people will not be prepared for college if they change their mind, it is their choice in the end. If they decide to take the vocational track, it is their choice.
UNable
The issue that inspired this cartoon is that the United Nations is weak, and unable to do anything. The object that is displayed in the cartoon is a turtle. Specific techniques used in the cartoon is symbolism, with the symbol being the turtle. Three things that I inferred from this conversation is that the United States has no power, United Nations is not a superpower, and it is helpless. The message that this cartoon portrays is that the United Nations has no power. People who would be against this cartoon is the United Nations because they believe that they do have power. The artist's point of view is that they have the same beliefs as the picture. The artist believes the United Nations is helpless. This is not a persuasive picture because it is only to show that the United Nations is helpless.
